Explanation - Ideally your monitor would display the test image as follows:

a) The top horizontal area of the image should appear pure white.

b) The bottom horizontal area of the image should appear pure black.  

c) The central horizontal area is divided into 21 distinct areas ranging from pure black at the left of the scale, to pure white at the far right.   All 21 tones in this horizontal area should be visible and completely free of any colour tint.
