Stone 35a, West Kennet Avenue (September 2016)

" .... only quite shallow holes had been dug for the avenue stones, and they were held upright chiefly by the packing of sarsens and blocks of chalk around their bases.   Some of this chalk had been dug from the lowest reaches of the ditch, indicating that the earthwork and the Kennet avenue were probably being put up at the same time".   ~ Burl, p 76
